“I had been homeless with my daughter for almost 2 years. Now we have a home where we can sleep and get up without the fear that we may not have a place to sleep for the next night. I just want to let you guys know how much hope, relief and security your program gives a woman such as myself in a situation that most don’t seem to understand. The HCA Family Fund gives families security within their homes.” –Terry W.
Problem Statement: It was estimated that there was less than 1% of housing availability in Sonoma County in 2016. It was noted in the “Portrait of Sonoma County 2014” that about one in eight people (12%) in the county live below the poverty line. Nearly half of all households (46%) spend more than 30% of their income on housing. According to RealtyTrac data 2016, Sonoma County ranks in the top ten of least affordable places to live in the entire country. It was estimated that it would take 82% of the average Sonoma County resident’s salary to afford mortgage payments on the median house in the County. It was also reported that from 2010 to 2014, Sonoma County’s median renter income dropped by 9% and median rents increased by 17%, according to the California Housing Partnership.
Goal of the Program: The Fund is designed to assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless with once in a lifetime assistance combined with financial coaching to empower the participant in creating a household budget, develop skills necessary to manage a household, and learn the importance of saving.
